Gruene Hall features
the best in live Texas and Americana music
every day, year
‘round – and most of it is free!
These are highlights for May 2009. Be sure and check our website for the complete May calendar!
Kevin
Welch is
the godfather of songwriters in the Americana Music scene, and his son
Dustin
Welch is quickly following
in his footsteps. Like all
good dads, Kevin recently gifted his son with a car...well, in this case,
a checkered cab - car, which
they fondly call Checker.
Ole
Checker needs a little work though, as you can see. Help the boys
pimp their ride by
coming out to Gruene Hall
Wednesday evenings in May. You'll hear the Welch clan crank out great original
songs and tell stories,
some of which may be true. Special guest openers each week incude
Susan Gibson, The Trishas
(features
Kevin's daughter, Savannah), Jason Eady, &
Chris Berardo.
There's
no cover charge for the show, but drop a few bucks in the tip
jar if you can, and help
Checker get that much needed new muffler!

Review: Luke Olson "Red River Blue" at Countrychart.com
For a young guy, Luke
Olson has had an awful long career. That's because he started in the music
business at the age of 8. "Red River Blue" continues his unique brand of
casual country that has made him a popular concert draw. Plus, Olson has
also appeared with everybody who's anybody in the Texas country music scene.
Luke Olson's songwriting is country through and through. His lyrics are
straightforward and to-the-point. And the San Antonio native shines in
the fun, country anthem "Gone Fishin." Two other standouts are also songs
written by Olson titled "Everyday" and "Hello My Old Friend.".....

Brandi Carlile is from a small town called Ravensdale, located in Washington state. Her early influences range from classic country to 70's rock. Her first band leaned toward heavy rock and roll, but Carlile's emotionally powerful songwriting and acoustic guitar work soon became the dominant component of the group's sound. They began touring regularly, headlining small venues and opening shows for Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, Johnny Lang, and many others. After several very successful independent releases, Carlile was signed to Columbia Records in 2005, releasing a self-titled album later that same year. The album earned enthusiastic reviews, and Carlile was named one of 2005's "Artists to Watch" by Rolling Stone. She released a 2nd album for Columbia in 2007 and continues to make her way up the ladder. Three of her songs have been featured on the hit TV series "Grey's Anatomy" and Carlile's song "The Story" has been featured in a General Motors commercial that aired during the Beijing Olympic Games. She makes her debut performance at Gruene Hall on May 28th. Tickets for "An Intimate Acoustic Evening with Brandi Carlile and special guest Gregory Alan Isakov" go on sale April 28th @ 1 pm. They'll go fast so get them early. $1 from every concert ticket sold will be donated to the Looking Out Foundation.

Free Show Highlights for May!

Sat. May 2nd - The Belleville Outfit After a successful, "Adopt a Song" campaign to raise funding to record with, the new Belleville album is here! "Time to Stand", by the Austin band "that captures the best of the hippie-friendly roots string band zeitgeist, without succumbing to it” (No Depression), is named after a tune packed with Appalachian and bayou imagery and exemplifies the band's mix of multi-genre music that includes swing, country, jamgrass, jazz, and blues. If you've seen these kids at the Hall before, you know that they tear it up, and their musicianship is incomparable to anyone else on the scene. Come get a copy of the new cd on May 2nd, and enjoy an afternoon of stellar music from Belleville.......1-5 pm. No cover charge.
Sun. May 10th - Slaid Cleaves "Everything You Love Will be Taken Away", Slaid Cleaves' new release, is not as much of a downer as the title indicates. As a matter of fact, Slaid is the kind of guy that can write a song about a gruesome murder and you'll find yourself joyfully singing along with him. That could be what famed horror novelist-movie producer Stephen King likes about him. He says, " I’m glad I found Slaid Cleaves, because my life would have been poorer without him. You’ll feel the same, I think, when you listen to this beautifully crafted album. Listen, go to one of Slaid’s shows, take a friend, and pass on the news: not all the good guys wear hats." --Stephen King, 2009 Come and enjoy another special Sunday afternoon performance with Slaid and company, and get a copy of the new cd on May 10th, 5:30- 9 pm. No cover charge.
Sat. May 16th - The Fireants (of Austin) are Ian Stewart, Zeke Jarmon, Rebecca Pledger, Victor Ziolkowski, and Steven Campbell. They range in age from 15 to 17 and attend three different Austin area high schools where individually they participate in marching band, jazz band, orchestra, and classical guitar studies. Following in the footsteps of The Belleville Outfit (who previously held the title of youngest band to hold rotation at Gruene Hall) they have combined their talents and have created a sound that covers everything from roots to rock, re-doing old classics, and also writing plenty of their own good tunes. These kids are good.....they've got fiddle, piano, guitars, and various other instruments formulating the band sound and they work it well. (Ponty Bone fans might remember Zeke Jarmon, (son of former Squeezetone guitar player, Spencer Jarmon) who played washboard with the Squeezetones long before he ever reached high school. Free show, 1-5 pm
Sat. May 23rd - The Monstas are an invention of famed drummer Ernie Durwawa, a fixture on the Texas-drummer scene who's played with Doug Sahm, The Texas Tornados, Los Jazz Vatos, Clifford Scott and countless others. The Monstas are kind of a Texas-New York tribute to New Orleans...add the great Joe Morales on sax, and boogie-woogie keyboardist Brian Mitchell, whose credits include Bob Dylan, Al Green, and Levon Helm.....and weighty pros Matt Smith, Rich Stanmyre, Aaron Lack, all highly respected musicians, and you have a band of monster musicians.....With a New York accent that's Monstas. The boys make their Gruene Hall debut on May 23rd, bringing 4 hours of great music to the Memorial Day weekend afternoon. 1-5 pm, no cover charge!

Travel Channel/TexMex/Bluegrass - at Historic Gruene Hall!
Travel Channel to visit Gruene - Friday, May 8th
Plans are underway for the filming of a pilot series celebrating "honky tonks and joints" to air on the Travel Channel this Fall and into next Spring. They will be featuring Gruene Hall as one of the three pilot shows they are filming. A food segment featuring the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, is included and they will also highlight the entire culture of the Gruene area, including shopping and river activities.
You can be in the audience when the Travel Channel films the VATO VALLEY BOYS on the Gruene Hall stage. The band features Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson's harmonica player), Flaco Jimenez & Augie Meyers (from the original Texas Tornados) and Dan Crary (Bluegrass guitar legend) and Ernie Durwawa (Doug Sahm, Texas Tornados.) The colorful puro-party jam starts at 3:30 pm on May 8 when the Vato Valley Boys hit the stage with a raucous collision of TexMex and Bluegrass music reminiscent of the spirit of Gruene Hall in the 1970s. The show is free and open to the public so come on out!
