James McMurtry

James McMurtry      Friday, May 12th  (tickets at the door only)

It's not surprising that James McMurtry has a talent for songwriting, given his roots as the son of famed Texas author Larry McMurtry. Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, James has worked hard over the years to establish himself as one of the strongest Texas songwriters of our time. In a political era that is begging for protest songs, McMurtry is one of the few out there that is brave enough and smart enough to write and perform songs penned to make us think about what is going on in the world around us. The Heartless Bastards, his band for ten years, are there to back him up, both musically and spiritually. This will be a great show, with Scott Miller taking time out from his busy schedule to come and open the show. Tickets at the door only for this one, so get there early!

Sarah Hickman banner

Sara Hickman

Sara Hickman, whose angelic voice has graced more than 15 of her own releases as well as 25 guest appearances on release by other artists, makes her Gruene Hall debut on Mother's Day - May 14th, 5-9 pm. Sara's appearance preludes a June release of her long awaited new cd, "Motherlode", a two-disc CD set of 20 songs. The cd takes a turn back to the world of "Adult" music after five years of creating award-winning music for children. In addition to her passionate work with  kids, Sara has had time to score a #3 adult contemporary hit ( "I Couldn't Help Myself"), twice been a guest of NBC's Tonight Show, hosted her own VH1 special, and produced an independent video which won first place in the USA Film Festival.

Jonathan Edwards   (special guest w/Sara Hickman)

**** And to make a good show even better, Sara's good friend Jonathan Edwards will be performing as special guest from 5-6 pm. Jonathan is one of the originals of a score of extremely talented singer-songwriters to come out of the late 60's - early 70's era. You know him from the mega radio hit  "Sunshine" (Go away today - I don't feel much like dancing.....), but he has dozens of other great songs, including Lay Around the Shanty, Don't Cry Blue, and Emma. It's a special treat to have such a great talent perform for us on a Sunday afternoon, so come on out. There is no cover charge! ****

Heybale

Heybale has quickly established themselves as a mainstay for Gruene Hall and will perform on the last Saturday afternoon of each month in 2006. Heybale performs country music the way it ought to be. With band members like guitar legend Red Volkeart (from Merle Haggard's band), Earl Poole Ball (a long time member of Johnny Cash's band) and Tom Lewis, who's played drums with the best, how could they miss. Gary Claxton is a new voice on the country music scene, who's right in step with the rest of the band. Come on out for a Saturday afternoon country dance in Texas' oldest dance hall!   May 27th, 1-5pm.  No cover charge!
