George Strait Sings
Praises of Gruene Hall
Texas' Oldest Operating Dancehall
Nurtures Up-and-Coming Musicians
By Craig Shelburne
George Strait poses in
the Hall's front room for early album cover
"Strait Country", left

"I have many great memories of
playing at Gruene Hall," Strait says. "It was definitely one of
the highlights of my early career. Pat Molak, who owns it and I
still consider a friend, let us play there one Sunday afternoon for, I
think, 50 cents at the door. He had never heard us and wanted to check
us out before he let us do a weekend night. This led to many great nights
at one of Texas' greatest dancehalls." Read the full article

POCO's
influence runs deep in both country and pop music, being one of the first
groups to pioneer country-rock music with harmonies and instruments of
country mixed with rock 'n' roll rhythms. The original members, in addition
to Rusty Young and George Grantham, were guitarists Richie
Furay and Jim Messina, both from Buffalo Springfield;
and bassist Randy Meisner, who later was one of the founding members
of the Eagles. POCO’s first number one hit,
“Crazy Love”,
appeared on the band’s multi-platinum Legend album, in 1979. Other
great hits include "Heart of the Night" , Keep on Trying.
Call
it Love, Go and Say Goodbye and many more. Current members of
POCO include mainstays Rusty Young and
Paul Cotton,
and
Jack Sundrud and George Lawrence.

Gospel Brunch w/ A Texas Twist
The 2nd Sunday of Every Month!
The Gospel Silvertones, one of Austin's newest and uplifting Gospel groups, are a new addition to Gruene Hall's "New Orleans Style Gospel Brunch with a Texas Twist". They perform all over Central Texas, incuding appearances at the Austin City Limits Festival for the past few years. They have recently finished recording their new CD "On The Battlefield" which can be purchased at the show.
The Texas style Gospel
show is led by Bret Graham, one
of Gruene Hall's favorite country musicians. Bret sings his cowboy
style Gospel tunes and accompanies The Gospel Silvertones. Bret and
his band also accompany singer Selena Affrim, a longtime mainstay
of the Hall's Brunch. The Gospel Brunch takes place the 2nd Sunday of every
month (June 10th & July 8th) and tickets are available on-line,
or
by calling 830-629-5077.
Congratulations to KNBT 92.1 FM Radio New Braunfels, whose 11th Annual Americana Music Jam was a success again this year. Held May 20th at Gruene Hall, the Jam included stellar performances by 13 different acts including the return of The Greencards, Radney Foster, Charlie Robison, Cory Morrow, and Jason Boland, just to name a few. The Jam benefited The Crisis Center of Comal County, whose mission is to provide crisis and prevention services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and The Braunfels Foundation, which provides after school programs for at-risk middle school children.
