GRUENE HALL PRESENTS:
In 1987, four musicians got
together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at the
New Orlean's landmark Tipitina's. It was a night of mostly acoustic
music - sparse instrumentation with a strong emphasis on songwriting and
vocal harmonies. The show far exceeded expectations, and on that
March night,
the
subdudes were born. Seven albums later, the 'dudes
are proud to announce the release
of their new Keb Mo
produced CD, Behind the Levee. Get

Raul
Malo was born in Miami of Cuban-immigrant parents. He originally made
his mark in the country music world with The Mavericks, but
Malo won't need to rely on that referral for much longer. With each show
he makes more of a name for himself as one of the premier vocalists in
music today. He sings in both Spanish and English, reflecting calypso,
jazz, salsa, and country influences, and playing out the theme of universal
love. His cover of "Blue Moon", which received a good amount of radio airplay,
will send chills throughout your soul, as will many of his songs. He blew
us away with his first appearance at Gruene Hall - don't miss out on this
chance to see him again. Tickets are going fast - get 'em while you can!

what you wanna do? I think I could stay with you... For a while, maybe
longer if I do..."Pure Prairie
League's best known song is not their only good song, as we found out
from their first appearance at the Hall last year. A successful country-rock
band during the 1970s and early '80s, PPL is touring again and enjoying
every minute of it. Their brand of country-rock fits right in with today's
music scene, and in fact, was a precursor to what today we call Americana
music. If you missed them the first time they played here, or not, come
check them out this time. You won't be disappointed. get

Country Music Thursdays at Gruene Hall!
Get ready for another summer of "Country Music Thursdays", where we present some of the finest up and coming country musicians residing in Texas. Dance on the floors of the oldest dance hall in Texas, or grab a seat at a table for an up close and personal musical experience.
On
June 1st, we welcome rising star James
Hand. James has garnered alot of attention lately with his
latest Rounder Records release, "The Truth Shall Set You Free",
and is expected by many to rise to the top. Amongst those that believe
in him include actor Jason Patrick, who is funding a documentary
that is following the rise of Hand's career. Word is they will be filming
the show on June 1st, so come on out and be a part of it. Also in
playing in June are Dane Sterling(June
8) and Jamie Richards(June
22) .......both are supported by close members of the George Strait
team, so expect some good tunes from these bands. Jesse
Dayton (June 15) leans toward the rock-billy side of country
and is a big hit in Russia these days (seriously!) Not sure if he sings
in Russian yet though......Roger
Wallace takes the last Thursday in June. He's a talented musician
and songwriter that plays authentic old-school country in the vein of Hank
Williams and Buck Owens. Remember, there's no cover charge
for these shows so come on out and get countrified the Gruene Hall way!
Father's Day - Sunday,
June 18th
An innovative idea from ComboPlate Booking,
"POP Stars
! dads who rock !, is a project where a new definition is offered of
what it means to be a POP STAR. Men who balance their musical lives, family
and fatherhood... dad singer-songwriters - the true POP STARS of the music
scene. Come on out to Gruene on Father's Day and hear renowned songwriters
Michael
Fracasso, Beaver Nelson and Matt the Electrician (all devoted
Pops) swap songs. (Nathan Hamilton was originally scheduled to perform
alongside these Pops, but has a new baby due on that exact date!) It's
an early show, so come on out and give a listen, and then treat your
Pop to dinner at The Gristmill
River Restaurant. Then come back and listen to major-label bound
Big
Blue Hearts (5-9 pm). All shows are free to attend!
In Memory of Steve Coffman &
Clifford Antone
Gruene Hall pays tribute to 2 influential and respected figures in the Texas music scene who recently passed.
Steve Coffman was a pioneer of early Texas radio and a true believer and supporter of Texas music. He brought the Texas-radio format to every radio station that he worked at, helping to create the popular format that it is today. He wound up his career at 98.7 Texas-Mix Radio in Victoria. Steve was truly the spirit of Texas Music Radio.
Clifford Antone, former owner of the namesake blues club Antone's, is credited with launching the careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous T-Birds, and many, many others. He passed away Tuesday from natural causes. Clifford was a musical icon and is largley responsible for helping the live music scene in Austin become what it is today. No one had more passion for the blues than Antone, and his generous heart left an eternal mark on the local and international blues scene. He and his contributions will be missed.
