Sonny Landreth is one of the most unique guitar players on the planet. He's an American blues musician from southwest Louisiana who is especially known as a slide guitar player. He has developed a technique where he also frets notes and plays chords and chord fragments "behind" the slide while he is playing, leaving even the most advanced guitar players in awe. Landreth's guitar capabilities landed him work as a sought-after session musician and he's played on records with John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, Freddy Fender, John Mayhall, Kenny Loggins, Mark Knopfler and many more. Eric Clapton said he is "probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced." With accolades like that, you can't afford to miss seeing Sonny's magic up close on the Gruene Hall stage. Virtuosos in their own right, Cindy Cashdollar along with Steve James and  Kevin Smith open the show.   get tickets

Shake Russell

Sat. Dec. 15th (1-5 pm)   no cover charge!

If you’re a true Texan, then Shake Russell’s music has touched your life in some way. And if you aren't aware of that already, it may have happened without your knowing it. Seventeen million copies of Russell's songs have been bought, while being recorded by the likes of Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Waylon Jennings, and many others. He's had a song go up into Space with the astronauts (Deep in the West), composed a theme song commemorating the Texas sesquicentennial (Travelin' Texas), and was commissioned by Texas State University to write the theme song of the San Marcos River (River of Innocence). "Live at Gruene Hall" is the new CD/DVD project by Shake Russell and company and it's a true work of art that takes Russell another step into historical significance.  The two-disc set contains a CD, and a DVD. The DVD shadows the CD, but with candid interjections and stories from Shake Russell and his band mates, Doug Floyd and Mike Roberts.  Be one of the first to order "Live at Gruene Hall" online at My Texas Music, or pick one up at this special Saturday afternoon free show!

More free show highlights for December!

Dec. 8th  (1-5 pm) - There's no one named porter or davis in the band porterdavis.  They derive their name from their busking days in the Porter Square and Davis Square subway stations in Boston. It didn't take long for them to work their way up out of the subway and into Boston's premier listening rooms. A move down south to Austin has brought them even further south to Gruene Hall, and quickly into the hearts of Gruene Hall patrons. They started in our front room, but like many muisicians who have tread before them, they've worked their way into our main room so there's plenty of room for everyone.   (no cover)

Dec. 9th(5-9 pm) - Led by Chris Gaffney and Dave Gonzalez, The Hacienda Brothers were recently nominated for "Group of the Year" at this year's Americana Awards. Gonzales, formerly of San Diego's "The Paladins', is listed in the upcoming February 2008 issue of Guitar Player Magazine's list of the “Top 101 All-time Unsung Guitar Heroes”, which is quite an accomplishment, considering the number of good guitar players that are out there. Their Gruene Hall appearances are all too rare, so don't pass up this opportunity to catch the guys on a free Sunday afternoon show!   (no cover)

Dec. 31st  (1-5 pm) - The Band of Heathens help to close the year out with a free show on the afternoon of New Year's Eve.
They'll be singing old favorites as well as trying out some new tunes that will be on their new CD, due out this spring. (no cover)
